WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 -- Two of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies have raised a red flag for erectile dysfunction drugs, which will be on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration, which has asked the U. S. Food and Drug Administration to approve more than 2,700 drugs, said its latest warning label for the erectile dysfunction drugs had been changed to include information about heart attack risk. The FDA said it didn't know about the change.
The labels say the drugs have not caused heart attacks or strokes and that some users have suffered from heart attacks and strokes. The labels say the drugs could cause severe and permanent damage to the heart and bloodstream. U. officials will be required to give a public notice of all of the medicines that the FDA has approved. The FDA is considering whether it can require the companies to include the risk information in the label.
"It's very important that we understand how serious erectile dysfunction is and that we take that into account," said Dr. John Jenkins, the FDA's lead in erectile dysfunction.
"There are some very serious things that we have to do to prevent a heart attack," he said. "We are not putting that on patients."
The FDA said the drug labels did not include information about a possible link to heart attacks or strokes, or about men who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. It did not explain why the labels did not include the link information for heart attack or stroke.
The label for Viagra, the popular erectile dysfunction medication, had been changed to include information about heart attack risk. The FDA said the labels were "very informative."
Dr. John P. Ricks, the FDA's lead in the erectile dysfunction drug, said the label for Viagra did not mention the link to heart attack or stroke. "I don't think anyone should be given this information," he said.
"It's very informative. The FDA is asking the public to be informed."
A spokesman for Pfizer said Pfizer did not comment on the FDA's announcement on its list of Essential Medicines.
Viagra, the generic version of the drug, was approved by the FDA in 1998.
In 2005, it was approved for patients with erectile dysfunction who had a heart attack. The drug was the third most prescribed drug in the country by an estimated 5 million patients in a single year. The drug was first approved for erectile dysfunction in 1998. The FDA approved it in November of that year.
The FDA said that it did not know whether the drug is the most popular and used in the United States. The FDA said it was "not sure" whether the drug is prescribed for patients with heart disease.
The FDA said the drugs were not approved for use in pregnancy. "There are no data on safety or efficacy of this drug in pregnancy. There is very limited information available in pregnancy, so the FDA has no basis for deciding that it's not appropriate," it said in a release.
Pfizer said the company is working to address a growing problem of overuse of the drug. In 2004, Pfizer, the company that manufactures Viagra, began an investigation into overuse of Viagra. A company spokesman said the FDA has been working to address a growing problem of overuse of the drug.
The FDA said it is working to address the problems of overuse. The agency said the U. health care system has a responsibility to make sure that drugs are used appropriately.
The FDA said it does not have any reason to believe the drugs are being overused in pregnancy, but it will ask the company if it can ask Pfizer to add information about "proprietary" information to the label.
The FDA said Pfizer did not provide a "proprietary" warning about heart attack risk or the possible link to stroke. In the case of the drugs, the FDA said the warning includes warnings that Viagra should not be used by patients who have suffered a heart attack or stroke.
Pfizer said it is reviewing a potential drug safety issue for a more "controlled" use of Viagra.
"Any other drugs that have been approved to treat erectile dysfunction should be considered in this way," the FDA said.
Viagra was the first drug approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. In 1998, a study showed that Viagra reduced the risk of death in patients with heart disease.
